The Lough Derg Cottage market was first imagined over 3 years ago by a group of community volunteers in Portumna.  At the time,  Portumna had a weekly farmers market held every Friday in the Town Hall run by community volunteers which has since ceased.

The Lough Derg Cottage market have held a small number of local markets around the town in association with An Gáirdin Eco Centre.

The Market Square, Portumna is the natural home for the Cottage Market and has the support of local community groups, local business, An Gáirdin and professional market stalls who currently move nomadically around Lough Derg.

The Wild Geese East Galway Taskforce submitted an application for funding support for equipment under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme [Accelerated Measure in Response to Covid-19] and their application was successful.

Minister of State, Anne Rabbitte, who has championed the initiative, welcomed the good news.

This means that the team will now be in a position to purchase robust, portable, durable, waterproof high grade quick open commercial gazebos ideal for mobile business.  In addition, we will be in a position to purchase 8ft foldable trestle tables.

A marketplace is a natural outdoor space to enhance well being, strengthening communities, and protect the environment, by empowering locals to ‘grow it yourself’.

Markets promote community spirit and encourage grass root enterprises.

Our vision is to see the Lough Derg Cottage market become an integral part of the rural regeneration of our town and provide a much needed opportunity for people for all ages andbackgrounds to gather, socialise and support each other as we emerge from the Pandemic.
